Africa Remix opened first at Museum Kunst Palast in 2004 in Düsseldorf, Germany. This is one the most significant aspects of the exhibition in that despite its ‘ground-breaking’ status as one of the largest exhibitions about art from the African continent, it debuted to audiences outside of Africa. The 2008 opening at Johannesburg Art Gallery was the first time the exhibition was shown on the continent. It did not only receive an overwhelming attendance but has also since marked a pivotal moment defining how African art, artists and curators were reinstating a shift in how Africa was repositioning itself globally. Africa Remix is one of the exhibitions acculturated as what scholar Chika Okeke-Agulu terms ‘mega shows’ of the twentieth century. They have not only shaped the exhibition enterprise, but also above all as pointed by Okeke-Agulu challenged old representations of Africa in art history.
