The Foundation for Contemporary Art-Ghana is an active network of artists created to offer a platform for the presentation and the development of a critical forum for the promotion of contemporary art in Ghana. FCA was founded in 2004 by 23 founding members representing artists, gallery owners, academics and patrons of the arts. The founding of FCA was initiated by Virginia Ryan (Australian-Italian Artist/Writer) and the Late Prof. Joe Nkrumah (Anthropologist/Conservator/Curator).

‘A Whitespace’ is the open creative space, for A Whitespace Creative Agency (AWCA). It acts as a flexible exhibition /installation space, gallery, photography studio, workshop, and fashion pop up space, for the new wave of creatives, in Nigeria.

Ker Thiossane

A cultural and social laboratory founded on artistic experimentation, open culture, and shared knowledge, in Dakar, Senegal
Kër Thiossane is a venue for research, residence, creation and training dedicated to social and artistic innovation. It encourages the integration of multimedia in traditional artistic and creative practices, and seeks to support the mixing of disciplines. With it’s fablab and the Garden Jardin Jet d’Eau, Kër Thiossane,as a multimedia and cultural space for artistic and citizenship imagination, focuses its activities on research into art and new technologies and what they imply in our societies. Kër Thiossane seeks to link the development of artistic digital practices to other domains of society; education and training, creative industries, citizenship, ecology, city development…
Through the activities it offers, Kër Thiossane brings new technologies within reach of as many people as possible as tools for expression and creation but also as tools for access to culture and knowledge. Since 2008, Kër Thiossane organized 8 editions of Afropixel Festival which invites international actors of digital art to exchange with local actors and federate to collectively contribute to a better perception and dissemination of digital arts in Africa. Through this initiative, it also allows the public and Senegalese artists to be in tune with the changes related to the development of ICT and the questions or modes of expression that result, while preserving their identities.

CCA Lagos

The Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos (CCA, Lagos) is an independent, non-profit, art institution established in 2007. It aims to provide a platform for the development and presentation of contemporary art and culture; prioritising media such as photography, film and video, performance and installation art, both locally and internationally.

Doual’art

Place: Cameroon

Doual’art is a contemporary art center based in Douala since 1991. As a research laboratory on the relationship between art and the city, it wants to push the boundaries of contemporary art. Its ambitions is to give a soul to a changing southern city, to reveal its emerging identities, to give a forum for public speech on specific issues as well as change the gaze on the aesthetics of its environment and, by the end, create an audience carefulness of contemporary art. To do this, doual’art exhibits and invites cameroonian and international artists, both in “Espace doual’art”, the white cube gallery space and outside in the public areas, where these creative people (visual artists, designers, architects,…) are invited to dialogue with urban practices. Since 2007, doual’art organizes the Trienal SUD-Salon Urbain de Douala, a public art festival whose purpose is to go and meet the inhabitants and enrich the city’s contemporary heritage.

Henry Tayali Visual Art Centre

The Henry Tayali Art Gallery was named as a tribute to late artist Henry Tayali, who died in Germany in 1987. Henry Tayali was born in Serenje, Zambia in 1943. Tayali’s talent was evident so early that he had his first exhibition at the age of 15, in Bulawayo , Zimbabwe where he lived at the time. He had already developed a social and political conscience which came to inspire all his work. His work reflected African nationalism, and deep concern for Africa’s urban masses uncomfortably uprooted from their traditions.

Le Thread

Place: Senegal

Thread is a socio-cultural center with a residency program to allow local and international artists to live and work in Sinthian, a rural village in Tambacounda, the southeastern region of Senegal. It houses two artists’ dwellings, as well as ample indoor and outdoor studio space. Thread is a flexible and evolving public space — venues for celebrations, classes in language and health, and performances and village meetings are just a few of the ways the local population has taken over programming of the new community center. The mission of Thread is twofold: to allow artists access to the raw materials of inspiration found in this rarely-visited area of the world; and to use art as a means of developing linkages between rural Senegal and other parts of the globe.
