The Nest Collective

Place: Kenya

The Nest Collective is a multidisciplinary collective living and working in Nairobi, Kenya.
Founded in 2012, the Nest Collective has created works in film, music, fashion, visual arts and literature, such as the critically-acclaimed queer anthology film Stories of Our Lives, which has so far screened in over 80 countries and won numerous awards. In 2013, the Nest Collective also founded HEVA—Africa’s first creative business fund of its kind—to strengthen the livelihoods of East Africa’s creative entrepreneurs. In 2018, the Nest Collective founded the Strictly Silk program—a dance party and multimedia space that centres joy, safety and community for women and non-binary people of all origins, faiths and generations.
Our work—being born in Nairobi—makes strongest reference to African urban and contemporary experiences, establishing this as our primary datum for inquiry on our histories and reflections about possible futures. While our work often responds to and is aware of interconnected issues at a global scale, we primarily address Kenyan young men and women, and are excited when the work speaks to other audiences.

The GoDown Arts Centre

Place: Kenya

Established in 2003, The GoDown Arts Centre has contributed significantly to the growth, recognition and visibility of local artists by fostering and facilitating collaborations and encounters between artists from different disciplines and the community. The arts centre on Dunga road hosts ten autonomous creative organizations and 15-20 visual artists in residence. The GoDown’s interventions mainly focus on building capacity for artists and developing platforms for critical dialogue and strategic convenings targeted towards tackling important aspects in the arts sector – which include the Creative Economy, the local policy environment and training for practitioners. We also create platforms where artists can showcase their work – concerts, exhibitions, festivals.

Kulungwana

Kulungwana – Association for Cultural Development, was officially registered on 23rd May 2006 in Maputo, Mozambique, and opened its Exhibition Space “Sala de Espera” at the Central Railway Station (CFM) in 2008. Since 2005, Kulungwana organizes the Maputo International Music Festival, and more recently, Xiquitsi, training project for orchestras and choirs. The gallery holds solo and group exhibitions, workshops and book launches.

Assemblage

Assemblage is a non-profit organisation which intends for the visual arts community of Johannesburg to connect, to share ideas, information and advice and to collaborate. It provides an inclusive forum where visual art students, graduates and professionals can network. Through an informative website, peer mentoring groups, workshops, group exhibitions, artist studios and other collaborative projects, it hopes to contribute and promote artistic innovation, collaboration and a proactive vibrancy within Johannesburg.

KAS/Kin ArtStudio project Is a cultural, non–profit Organization, was founded in 2010, by the congolese visual artist, Mwilambwe Bondo, KAS is an artist initiative serves as a laboratory for developing talent on an national and an international level. which favors the creation or the innovation in the field of visual arts and other forms of contemporary artistic expressions in Kinshasa, DRCongo, in Africa and in the World.

Chimurenga

Chimurenga is a project-based mutable object, a print magazine, a workspace, and platform for editorial and curatorial activities. Chimurenga initiatives include the Chimurenga Chronic, a pan African quarterly gazette; the Pan African Space Station (PASS), an internet-based music platform; African Cities Reader, a bi-annual publication of new writing and art on African cities; Chimurenganyana, a series of pavement-disseminated monographs; and many more
